Careers get funny over time
Our pathways through the wood
Will often fracture as we climb
Or be misunderstood.
Ambition follows narrow wishes
Treasure hides in trash
The poorest jobs can offer riches
Not just petty cash.
Devotion often brings demise
Beware you care too much
Or else, displeasure amplifies
And love becomes a crutch.
Remember, plans make risky friends
For plans can leave you blinded
Throughout the storm, a tree must bend
The wise are open-minded.
Yes, jobs get funny over time
And year by creeping year
They'll steal your hours, shilling dimes
And call themselves careers.
I’m not the best person to ask for career advice—mostly because I no longer believe that careers are a viable option for so many of us. It’s strange, seeing AI threaten so many so directly. It reminds me of the first time I saw that happen, starting 20 years ago.
Near the tail end of that, I decided to pick up a camera again for the first time since high school. I started making a habit of taking photos of where I worked in the off hours, not knowing at the time that I was documenting its demise.
Anyway, there’s a zine I made about that if you want to take a look. It’ll basically cost you shipping.
