I liked this little "meander." The thought about horses is gonna stick with me now -- hopefully it won't keep me up at night.
Also, I want to commend you for being this open. It is very inspiring.
As a sidenote, there's a French singer called "Pomme" I really like, and one of my favorites of hers is about insomnia. Not sure if that comes through the language barrier, but it is a good song nonetheless, I think: https://youtu.be/1amMJN7joko?si=vbHr7q9mVFf454O9
Believe it or not, I took many years of French. (I've family from France and Africa, so my parents thought it'd be a good idea that I learn some. Entirely moot point because their English is just fine where my French is absolutely terrible, but I remember enough that it doesn't sound completely foreign to me.) That's beautiful! I had to translate the lyrics to get the full picture, but thanks so much for sharing!
Have any current favorites you're going through? I'm re-listening to "The Wager," the non-fiction story about the shipwreck. (Byron's grandfather played a pivotal role, which for me was the initial draw.)
I tend to listen to British police procedural series. Sally Rigby, Joy Ellis, JM Dalgliesh, Wes Markin. Not so interesting they keep me awake, but enough to quiet my brain.
Nice one, Tom. Keeping one's thoughts empty certainly is a struggle! Starting off with a distraction in the form of a story seems to be one of the few things that helps these days.
I'm not that familiar with his solo stuff, but was a huge Straights fan in the late 70s-80s. I think Love Over Gold was their peak, and their best album...though there are so many good tunes on their first album!
My college roommate used to play Private Investigations over and over and over (I think he broke up with his girlfriend right around the time I bought it and that song resonated with how he felt) so I kind of got sick of that tune...😂
Greatest lyric line ever written in the 80s came from that album...

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me completely -- I didn't want to assume though!
While I have some sense of the language, I am also absolutely terrible at it. It is pretty to listen to though. Very melodious.
'I don’t just listen to crime fiction. As I said, I listen at night'. That's me, too. It quiets the brain and lets me fall asleep.

I am up with you at night... here's a poem about it:
Try to be thoughtless, stop thinking in bed,
get some sleep, empty your head.

That was one of my favorite albums; I had it on vinyl, still have it on CD somewhere.
My favorite from the album is still "Industrial Disease." 😂
Ah yeah, that's definitely a winner. :)
His solo stuff I liked almost as much as Dire Straits.

"How come Jesus gets industrial disease?"
Kind of summed up the whole decade...😁
