Happy Thanksgiving, James and anyone else reading this! Take those words in whatever way feels the most meaningful for you, at present. Life is not a Hallmark card. We can only do our best to make the best of it -- and hope for the best!
Thanks, Hasse, and same to you with your winter holidays! I see it as a both/and thing. They don't have to be strictly magical or terrible. We can acknowledge both if that's what they are. And of course we're allowed to have some of our own autonomy and do what we need to do.
Thank you! I agree. And I think sometimes the real “magic” is how the holiday spirit still manages to seep through in spite of whatever else is going on.
That was something I specifically felt, one year where I celebrated Christmas in China. It was honestly weirdly magical, in its own way.
Thanks so much, Mike! I think that's the fun thing about holidays, too; they come around every year so no matter how routine, everyone's bound to experience a couple of crazy ones. :) Thanks a ton for reading and sharing.
I know missing or showing up late to family functions and dysfunctions alike...Hope you have a great (pleasant? digestible?) holiday...Your poem belongs framed and in sight of many a family dinner table
Thanks, it's definitely something I've framed in my mind. And that's what I find so strange: It seems so many of us can relate to dysfunctional holidays—so why is that never portrayed in ads, TV specials or even spoken aloud? What's with the big open secret?
I presume it's just really frigging hard to write about outside of a comedy....and we know hollywood is currently allergic to difficult if it isn't a vfx question.
Oh man, absolutely. I find it so strange that such a universal occurrence goes so ignored in media. And so many folks navigate holiday weirdness differently, it'd be great if we started to share our experiences a little more.
I once had a Miller Lite ad penned before the actual one that inspired it concluded. Ended with a backfist and teeth flying and “boys will be boys and brothers will be brothers” some shit like that

Love your stories and poetry! I feel the alternating stress patterns so clearly, like a heartbeat.
